A look back at the past week

Last week, the stock markets were largely driven by U.S. inflation figures and Nvidia’s quarterly results.

On Wednesday, the core PCE price index came in as expected at 3.3% year-over-year and 0.2% month-over-month in July. In addition, it was reported that the U.S. economy grew by 1.5% in the second quarter of 2026, also in line with expectations. As a result, monthly inflationary pressure eased slightly, while economic growth was lower than in the first quarter of 2026. U.S. stock markets reacted slightly negatively to these figures.

Nvidia exceeded expectations for the fifteenth consecutive time. In particular, the forecast of 70% revenue growth in the coming year was well received. Other stocks in the chip and AI sectors also posted substantial gains.

Outlook for the coming week:

The most important macroeconomic release of the coming week is the U.S. jobs report, the Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP). Labor market trends serve as a key guide for the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy.

The Non-Farm Payrolls will be released on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Current market expectations are for around 55,000 new jobs in August. That would represent a clear improvement over July, when employment unexpectedly fell by 23,000 jobs.

A strong jobs report is not necessarily positive for the stock markets at this time. With inflation still high, a strong labor market could give the Federal Reserve more leeway to raise interest rates. Moderate job growth—for example, 30,000 to 60,000 jobs—combined with modest wage growth could be a favorable combination, particularly for technology and Nasdaq stocks.

In addition, the European Union’s consumer price index for August will be released on Tuesday, September 1. In July, inflation stood at 2.9% on a year-over-year basis.

Several major companies will also release their quarterly earnings reports next week. The most notable are Broadcom, Dell, and Palo Alto Networks. Together, these companies offer an interesting glimpse into developments in AI chips, AI infrastructure, and cybersecurity.
