The week ahead: US interest rate decision

In Money Care's weekend report, we present the overview of the (macroeconomic) events that could cause movement in stock markets.

Review of last week:

International equity markets were under the influence of the U.S. trade measures announced over the weekend affecting a number of countries in the EU over the past week.

Equity markets reacted relatively calmly with declines of a few percent. After the previously promulgated measures in April 2025, panic broke out and stock markets subsequently fell between 10 and 15%.
On Wednesday, President Trump provided relief by announcing he will not go to war over Greenland and that increased trade tariffs are off the table.

Otherwise, markets remained devoid of very important or anomalous corporate or macroeconomic figures. The PCE inflation indicator was in line with expectations at 2.8%.

However, the US economy did grow by 4.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025. This was higher than expected and sharply higher than the 3.8% for the third quarter of last year. Thus, the US economy continues to gain steam.

Upcoming week:

In the coming week, we do not expect any major shifts in the financial markets due to very important macro-economic figures. On January 28, the Fed's (Federal Open Market Committee) FOMC (Federal Reserve) does meet for the interest rate decision in the US. However, all analysts consulted do not expect an interest rate change in January. It is possible that the ensuing press conference will provide surprising statements that could move the markets.
