What is a seed phrase?

← Back to Crypto FAQ

A seed phrase is a series of randomly generated words that acts as a backup for your cryptocurrency wallet and allows you to recover access to your funds. It is one of the most important security elements in crypto.

A seed phrase is the master key to your wallet and gives full access to your assets.

A seed phrase typically consists of 12 or 24 words generated when you create a wallet. These words are linked to your private keys and can recreate your entire wallet, including all balances and transaction history. Because of this, anyone who has access to your seed phrase can control your funds, which makes it critical to store it securely and offline. Unlike passwords, seed phrases cannot be reset or recovered if lost, so proper backup is essential. While they offer full control and independence, they also place complete responsibility on the user to protect their assets.

Short example:

Suppose your phone with your crypto wallet is lost or broken.

You install the wallet on a new device and enter your 12 or 24-word seed phrase.

Your wallet is restored, and you regain access to all your funds exactly as before.
