Introduction about the company

Symrise AG is a global chemical company based in Germany, headquartered in Holzminden, Lower Saxony. Following the merger of Dragoco and Haarmann & Reimer in 2003, the company has become a major supplier of fragrances and flavorings, as well as cosmetic ingredients. Symrise supplies products to companies in more than 160 countries, with applications in products ranging from soft drinks and perfumes to animal feed.

Key figures & achievements

In 2024, Symrise realized annual sales of €2.90 billion and net profit of €474 million. Although sales growth was modest at only 2.1%, the operating margin remained solid at 17.4%. Net profit fell slightly due to higher energy and raw material costs, but the company remained profitable through cost control and price increases. In July 2025, the market capitalization was €12.6 billion, putting Symrise among the smaller DAX40 players, but with a strong focus on profitability and innovation. The stock posted a loss of -24.23% over the past 12 months, which was mainly due to slower global demand for consumer products.

History & development

Symrise was founded in 2003 after the merger of Dragoco and Haarmann & Reimer, two companies that had been active in fragrances and flavorings since the 19th century. After going public in 2006, Symrise expanded through targeted acquisitions, including the U.S. Diana Group in 2014 and the Danish manufacturer Schaffelaarbos in 2022. These strategic expansions strengthened its position in animal nutrition, natural ingredients and functional nutrients. Over the past two decades, the company has positioned itself as a sustainable innovator in a competitive global market.

Sector & competition

Symrise competes with companies such as Givaudan, IFF and Firmenich. The sector is characterized by high barriers to entry, long customer relationships and constant pressure for sustainability. Symrise distinguishes itself with an integrated chain of natural raw materials, a strong focus on sustainability and close cooperation with major food and cosmetics brands worldwide. In animal feed, a growing segment, Symrise is the market leader in flavor enhancers (palatants) that improve the taste of animal feed.

Influence of Symrise AG on the DAX 40

Symrise was included in the DAX 40 in 2021 and represented an index weighting of 0.90% in December 2024. This makes it one of the smaller names in the index, but the stock offers investors access to sustainable consumption, food technology and cosmetics. Despite recent share price pressure, Symrise remains a relevant representative of the chemical and consumer-related industries within the DAX. Investment analysis & outlook

If you look at the chart below, you can see that the share prices of Symrise and the DAX were in sync until about a year ago. Then Symrise's share price started to split off. Whereas the DAX index has risen solidly since then, Symrise has not been able to keep up with that momentum. The share price reached its highest point in November 2021 at €132.65, but has gradually fallen back since then. This trend is mainly caused by margin pressure, rising commodity prices and a global decline in demand for consumer products.

Nevertheless, the company's fundamental position remains strong. The chart shows that the stock has moved around an important technical support point in recent months, which may indicate a possible bottom formation. Symrise has a solid customer base, a strong focus on innovation in R&D and a clear sustainability strategy, including in natural resources and circular manufacturing processes.

For 2025, analysts foresee a cautious recovery, with expected revenue growth of 4-6% and a stable margin. The strategic focus is on high-value segments such as botanical extracts, fragrances for niche cosmetics and functional ingredients for food and animal feed.

News & updates

Symrise announced in June 2025 a strategic partnership with a French producer of botanical extracts, strengthening its portfolio of natural ingredients. In addition, a new production line was opened in the U.S. to better serve the North American market. The sustainability strategy was also sharpened with targets for climate neutrality by 2030. Despite short-term headwinds, management remains positive about growth prospects.
