The week ahead: Inflation US
In Money Care's weekend report, we present the overview of the (macroeconomic) events that could cause movement in stock markets.
Review of last week:
International equity markets moved relatively sideways in the past trading week but the AEX was the positive outlier. Driven by heavyweight Tech funds, the AEX rose over 2% and reached the record high of 1,012 points.
US inflation figures were in line with expectations (+0.3% month-on-month and +2.7% year-on-year) although the Core CPI came in slightly lower at +0.2%. In itself positive for the stock market but did not give rise to sharply higher prices in the US. For your information; inflation in the Netherlands came in at 2.8% year-on-year in December.
In the US, the past week showed that the economy continues to develop well with higher retail sales, more home sales and lower unemployment claims on a weekly basis.
Upcoming week:
Monday, Jan. 19, US financial markets are closed due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. No very important macroeconomic figures will be released in the coming week. However, some attention will be paid to the release of US Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on Thursday, Jan. 22. Economic growth for the fourth quarter 2025 in the US is expected to have grown by 4.3%. At 4 p.m. on the same day, the Kern PCE figures will be released in the US. This shows the change in consumer spending and thus is an indicator of inflation trends.
