Outlook: The development of the Middle East conflict continues to shape the direction of stock prices
In this weekend Money Care report, we provide an overview of macroeconomic developments that could potentially cause additional movement in financial markets in the coming week.
Review of the past week
The financial markets were again strongly influenced last week by developments in the Middle East. The cease-fire announced Tuesday night caused a marked rebound in equity markets, with prices rising 3% to 5%. At the same time, oil prices fell more than 10%.
On Friday, the consumer price index (CPI) in the United States was published. The forecast was revised upwards to 3.4% year-on-year the day before publication, while a 1% increase was expected for March. In the end, inflation came in at 0.9% for March and 3.3% year-on-year. This represents a marked increase from the previous reading, when inflation stood at 2.4% year-on-year.
Markets reacted mostly positively to these figures, as inflation came in slightly lower than expected. Gold and equities received an upward boost and the euro rose against the US dollar.
Upcoming week:
No very important macroeconomic figures will be published in the coming week. However, some indicators may cause some volatility, notably the producer price index (PPI) from the United States and the consumer price index (CPI) from the European Union.
The PPI will be released at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The European Union CPI follows at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. European Union inflation is expected to have risen to 2.5% in March. After an extended period in which inflation remained around the desired level of 2%, a further rise may lead to increasing expectations of a possible interest rate hike by the European Central Bank later this year.
In recent weeks, the development of the Middle East conflict has played a dominant role in the direction of financial markets.
In the absence of any weighty macroeconomic figures, this theme is expected to continue to determine market sentiment and price direction in the week ahead.
