The week ahead: Will inflation stay under control?

In Money Care's weekend bulletin, we present the overview of the (macroeconomic) events that could cause movement in the stock markets.

Review of last week:

With important macroeconomic figures outstanding and no results released yet from leading listed companies, the past trading week has been relatively quiet. People were looking forward to July 9 as on that date the agreed tariff pause in the trade war would expire. However, President Trump has extended it to Aug. 1, bringing back the calm for a while. The countries concerned now have until Aug. 1 to conclude trade agreements with the US, otherwise the high tariffs from the US will still go into effect. We wait and see.

Next week:

The coming week revolves around inflation figures from the US and to a lesser extent from the EU and the UK. After the strong labor figures from the US, it is important that inflation does not rise too much. The market expects prices to rise 0.2% in June compared to May. Basic monthly inflation would rise 0.3% according to expectations. This would be a stronger increase than in May. In that month, the price increase was lower than expected.

On an annual basis, US goods and services price growth is expected to be 2.4%. This expectation remains close to the desired 2%.
Thus, a price increase is expected that slightly fuels inflation but remains within the desired range. If inflation indeed remains under control then this could have a positive effect on equity markets.
