The week ahead: temporary calm

In Money Care's weekend report, we provide an overview of the (macroeconomic) events that could move the stock markets.

Brief review of last week:

Trade War:

On May 12, 2025, the US and China reached an agreement to temporarily reduce their reciprocal import tariffs:

The US reduces its tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, including a 20% tariff targeting products related to the fentanyl crisis. China lowers its tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%.

These temporary cuts are intended to boost trade and prevent further economic damage. The agreement was reached after intensive negotiations in Geneva, with both countries expressing their desire to maintain a long-term trade relationship.

While the temporary tariff reductions provide some relief, significant structural issues remain. Both countries have indicated their intention to continue negotiations within 90 days to reach a more lasting solution.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether this temporary trade pause can lead to a more long-term de-escalation of trade tensions between the U.S. and China.

Inflation US

The U.S. Consumer Price Index rose monthly but less sharply than expected. On an annualized basis, US inflation currently stands at 2.3%, which is lower than expected. Equity markets are reacting positively.

Upcoming week:

For now, the coming week looks to be a relatively quiet trading week. The trade war has a break, and there are no macroeconomic figures coming out that will cause significant movements in the financial markets. The calm is relative as it could just be rudely disrupted by unexpected turns on the geopolitical scene.
