Economic calendar: June 8 – 12, 2026
Publication date: June 5, 2026
In this weekend Money Care report, we provide an overview of the key macroeconomic developments and corporate results that could move financial markets in the week ahead. The main focus is on inflation data in the United States.
Review of the past week:
The main macroeconomic event of the past week was the release of the monthly labor figures (Non-Farm Payrolls) for the month of May in the United States.
The unemployment rate came in at 4.3% (in line with expectations) and the average hourly wage also rose 0.3% in May in line with expectations. However, the number of new jobs increased by 172,000, which was sharply higher than the most recent expectation of 85,000. The U.S. labor market is thus developing well, further reducing the chances of a possible interest rate cut. Consequently, stock markets, gold prices and crypto markets reacted negatively immediately after the announcement.
Outlook for the week ahead:
Investors focus their attention next week primarily on the June 10 release of the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI). The CPI is the main measure of inflation trends. The market remains concerned about the sharp increase in inflation in the United States, which rose to 3.8% year-on-year in April. The market is particularly focused on the development of the core CPI. This figure excludes food and energy price increases.
The market seems to be taking into account a further rising CPI, possibly around 4.2% year-on-year, but with a slightly milder core CPI than in April. This rose 0.4% in April, but the forecast for May is for a 0.3% increase.
Also focus on the ECB's interest rate decision on Thursday, June 11. The market expects an increase of 25 basis points. The reason the market is now counting on an interest rate hike is mainly the resurgent inflation. According to Eurostat, Eurozone inflation rose to 3.2% in May from 3.0% in April.
