A Look Back at the Past Week

Over the past week, the European Central Bank kept interest rates unchanged. However, the likelihood of an interest rate hike in September has increased. This is due to rising oil and gas prices, which could cause inflation in the European Union to rise again.

Investors reacted negatively to the quarterly earnings reports from companies including Alphabet and Tesla. Shares of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, fell 8% following the announcement. Tesla shares lost more than 15%.

The positive U.S. labor market and inflation figures for June were overshadowed last week by growing uncertainty about the geopolitical situation. Developments in the Middle East conflict, in particular, are causing uncertainty among investors. Rising oil prices and capital market interest rates are putting pressure on sentiment in the financial markets.

Highly valued technology stocks on the Nasdaq, in particular, took a step back.

Outlook for the coming week:

On a macroeconomic level, investors are looking forward to the U.S. Federal Open Market Committee’s interest rate decision on Wednesday evening, July 29, at 8:00 p.m. Interest rates are expected to remain unchanged. The subsequent press conference at 8:30 p.m. will be closely watched, as policymakers may use it to elaborate on the outlook for future interest rate policy.

On Thursday at 2:30 p.m., U.S. core PCE inflation for June will be released. This is an important inflation measure for the Federal Reserve. Core PCE inflation is expected to come in at 0.2% on a monthly basis and 3.2% on an annual basis.

At the same time, the United States’ gross domestic product for the second quarter will also be released. Economic growth is expected to have slowed slightly from 2.1% year-over-year to 1.9% year-over-year in the second quarter.

On Friday, the European Union’s consumer price index will be released. Inflation is expected to have risen from 2.8% to 2.9% in July.

Financial markets will once again have a lot of corporate earnings reports to digest in the coming week. Microsoft, Meta, Apple, and Amazon, among others, will release their quarterly earnings. The calendar includes the release dates for the most influential companies.
