Introduction about the company

Infineon Technologies AG, based in Neubiberg near Munich, is a leading German semiconductor manufacturer. The company plays a crucial role in the development of energy-efficient technologies and is active in sectors such as automotive, industrial electronics, renewable energy and secure connectivity. Infineon has a strong focus on applications that enable the transition to a more sustainable, digital society, ranging from electric vehicles to smart energy grids. Through its technology expertise and strategic partnerships, Infineon positions itself as a key player in the European technology world.

Key figures & achievements

In fiscal year 2024, Infineon Technologies achieved sales of €14.67 billion and a net profit of €1.92 billion. Despite an 8.59% decline in sales compared to the previous year, the company continued to invest heavily in innovation. Research and development spending rose slightly to €2.56 billion, underscoring its strategic focus on technological innovation and product differentiation.

Infineon has about 58,000 employees worldwide and will have a market capitalization of €47 billion by April 2025, making it one of Europe's larger technology companies. In 2024, Infineon additionally committed to strategic expansion within artificial intelligence (AI) and edge computing markets in which energy-efficient chips are critical.

History & development

Infineon was founded on April 1, 1999, as a spin-off from Siemens AG. Since then, the company has developed into a global player in the semiconductor industry. A major milestone was the opening of an advanced 300-mm wafer plant in Villach, Austria in 2021 that significantly expanded its production capacity.

In line with its sustainability goals, Infineon aims to operate carbon-neutral by 2030 at the latest. In doing so, the company is investing heavily in environmentally friendly production methods and the circular use of raw materials. In 2025, the construction of a new plant in Dresden, Germany, was started, financed in part with support from the European Union under the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) program, aimed at technological independence in Europe.

Sector & competition

Infineon operates in a highly competitive market with major rivals such as STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, NXP Semiconductors and Renesas. Global demand for semiconductors remains high, driven in part by trends such as electrification, digitization and AI. Infineon is distinguished by its leading position in power electronics and its strong role in the automotive sector, where it supplies crucial components for electric propulsion, battery management and autonomous driving technology.

It is also increasingly active in the strategic positioning of Europe as less dependent on Asian chip producers, a theme that has become of strategic importance by 2025 due to geopolitical tensions.

Investment analysis & outlook

The chart below shows Infineon's (IFX) share price performance against the Euro Stoxx 50 index (ESX50) over the past five years. During this period, Infineon increased by over 77%, while the ESX50 showed an increase of about 60%. What stands out is Infineon's higher volatility: sharp corrections occurred especially in 2022 and early 2025, followed by strong recoveries. Despite these fluctuations, the stock continued to perform structurally above the index, indicating a stronger long-term development. At the same time, the share price performance underscores that Infineon is more sensitive to market movements and industry-specific trends than the broader market.

Infineon's strong performance is driven in part by increasing demand for semiconductors for electric vehicles, smart energy systems and industrial automation. Thanks to its leading position in power electronics and microcontrollers within the automotive sector, the company remains strategically well-positioned.

For 2025, the company expects a recovery in market demand, with growth opportunities in sectors such as e-mobility and sustainable technology. This combination of structural growth trends and internal optimization provides perspective for further share price development.

News & updates

In November 2024, Infineon announced a collaboration with Stellantis to advance innovation in power conversion and distribution for future vehicle architectures.

The previously mentioned "Step Up" cost-cutting program, which, among other things, eliminates 1,400 jobs and relocates another 1,400 positions to regions with lower labor costs, should help strengthen its competitive position.
