The week ahead: Inflation figures EU
In Money Care's weekend report, we present you with the overview of the (macroeconomic) events that could cause movement in the stock markets.
Review of last week:
The US shutdown has ended after 43 days and the federal government is operational again. This event gave the equity markets fresh air over the past week. The White House did indicate that the release of the important labor and inflation figures for October will not appear again. Investors will have to wait until Dec. 4 for the monthly labor figures for November and until mid-December for the U.S. Consumer Price Index for November.
On Thursday, news came out of the US that Fed members are reluctant to cut interest rates further in December. The reason is that inflation in the US is around 3%, one percentage point away from the desired level of 2%. Equity markets have been pricing in a December interest rate cut for a scary amount of time. The possible postponement put considerable pressure on equity markets Thursday night and Friday, causing prices to fall sharply.
Upcoming week:
No very important macroeconomic figures or events are scheduled in the coming week. Some attention on Friday afternoon 2:30 p.m. for the release of the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for both the manufacturing and major services sectors in the US. In addition, the Consumer Price Index in the EU will be released on Wednesday. Inflation in the EU is expected to fall slightly from 2.2% to 2.1%.
A significant deviation from expectations could start to cause additional movement in financial markets.
At the corporate level, we look forward to the release of Nvidia's figures on Nov. 19. Expectations for this particular company have long been sky-high. It is therefore once again exciting whether Nvidia can meet them.
