Outlook: US & EU interest rate decision

In Money Care's weekend report, we provide an overview of macroeconomic developments that could potentially cause additional movement in financial markets in the coming week.

Review of the past week

Geopolitical tensions and uncertainty about developments in the Middle East have brought nervousness among investors. A typical consequence of this situation is the fluctuation of oil prices. On Monday, the price of a barrel of U.S. crude oil reached $112.50, only to fall back to $75.50 on Tuesday and climb again to $96 in the following days. Equity markets fluctuated by about 5%, but overall, they held up reasonably well.

Inflation data from the U.S. were in line with expectations and virtually unchanged from the previous measurement period. U.S. inflation remained at 2.40% annualized in February.

Next week:

Developments in the war situation in the Middle East are expected to continue to dominate sentiment in financial markets in the coming week. Share prices are anticipated to continue fluctuating sharply as long as there is uncertainty about the further course of the conflict. The motto remains to take modest positions and, above all, to avoid panicking.

On the macroeconomic front, interest rate decisions will take center stage, particularly those in the United States. On Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will announce its interest rate decision for the U.S. Interest rates are expected to remain unchanged at 3.75%, given the still-high inflation in the U.S. Additionally, ongoing uncertainty from higher energy prices and geopolitical risks increase the risks of inflationary pressures. Investors are especially looking forward to the subsequent press conference at 7:30 p.m.

The European Central Bank (ECB) will announce its interest rate decision at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday. Most market data indicate a high probability that the ECB will leave interest rates unchanged at 2% in March. Economists do not expect the ECB to make any significant policy changes for now, as eurozone inflation remains around the target of 2%, and the economy is relatively stable.
