In this weekend Money Care report, we provide an overview of the key macroeconomic developments and corporate results that could move financial markets in the week ahead. The main focus is on monthly labor figures from the United States.

****Review of the past week:

**

The most important macroeconomic event of the past week was the release of the core PCE price index in the United States. This is an indicator of inflation trends. The outcome was 3.3% on an annual basis and on a monthly basis the core PCE price index was 0.2% in April. The annual increase was as expected, but on a monthly basis it was lower than expected. As a result, inflation fears eased slightly, causing equity markets to react positively.

**Outlook for the coming week:**

Investors turn their attention next week primarily to the release of the U.S. monthly labor figures (Non-Farm Payrolls) for the month of May. These data will be released at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Current expectations are for a cooling off from the positive April figures.

Expected job growth in May is currently 102,000 jobs (April +115,000)
The unemployment rate is expected to rise to 4.4% from 4.3% in April
Average hourly earnings month-on-month are expected to rise 0.2% in May. This is similar to April.

For financial markets, the key question is whether the figure deviates significantly. Job growth above 150,000 could push interest rates higher, as the labor market would appear stronger than expected. Below 70,000, especially with unemployment heading toward 4.5%, on the other hand, could fuel recession fears or hopes for interest rate cuts. Pay close attention to wages as well, as higher wage growth than expected could reinforce inflation concerns once again.
