Outlook: Middle East developments and corporate figures may guide markets

In this weekend Money Care report, we provide an overview of macro-economic developments that could potentially cause additional movement in financial markets in the coming week.

Review of the past week

At the start of the trading week, financial markets were hardly affected by the failed talks between the United States and Iran over the weekend. Markets opened quietly, appearing to anticipate a possible positive outcome to the Middle East conflict.

The release of the U.S. producer price index (PPI) for March gave a positive boost to equity markets. This measure of inflation trends rose by 0.5%, while a rise of 1.1% had been expected. As a result, equity markets rallied and the Nasdaq even reached a record level.

Oil prices moved less strongly than in previous weeks. The price of a barrel of Brent crude oil fluctuated between $91 and $99.
Both the gold price and Bitcoin experienced a positive week.

Upcoming week:

No heavy macroeconomic figures will be published in the coming week either. However, some indicators may cause additional volatility.

On Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., U.S. retail sales for March will be released. On Thursday at 2:30 p.m., the purchasing managers' index (PMI) for both manufacturing and services will follow.

In addition, quarterly earnings figures from Tesla (Wednesday at 10 p.m.) and SAP (Thursday at 10 p.m.) may cause movement in the markets.

The development of the Middle East conflict played a dominant role in the direction of financial markets last month. In the absence of important macroeconomic publications, this theme is expected to continue to determine market sentiment and price direction in the coming week.
