The week ahead: all eyes on the U.S. and China
In Money Care's weekend report, we present you with an overview of the (macroeconomic) events that could cause movement in the stock markets.
Brief review of last week:
In the past week, the trade war continued to escalate. The US and China bombard each other with mounting duties and measures. U.S. chip maker Nvidia expects a $5.5 billion loss due to the ban on AI chip exports to China. This led to a drop in Nvidia's share price and broader losses in U.S. stock markets. Gold prices reached a record high above $3,300 per ounce, reflecting increasing investor uncertainty.
ASML came out with tidy quarterly earnings and a healthy outlook. Because of the trade war, ASML issued a warning that its future outlook may be different. As a result, ASML listed lower.
The ECB cut interest rates by 25 basis points. The decision was made to support the weakening eurozone economy, which is under pressure from unpredictable U.S. trade policy and ongoing market uncertainty. Eurozone inflation fell to 2.2% in March, with core inflation at 2.4%. These figures are close to the ECB's 2% target.
Upcoming week:
The coming week is very quiet with important macroeconomic figures and events. Little fireworks can be expected from the macro figures.
Of course, the big market moves may come from developments in the trade war. In particular, the relationship between the U.S. and China is under high tension. Although no official summit is currently scheduled, both countries continue to keep diplomatic channels open. Given recent developments, it is possible that new meetings or negotiations could take place soon.
On Monday, April 21 (Easter Monday), stock markets in Europe will be closed, but stock markets in the U.S. will be open.
