Looking Ahead: U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) This Week

In this weekend update from Money Care, we’ve put together a handy overview of the listed companies reporting earnings this week. You’ll also find a summary of the key macroeconomic events that could impact the markets in the days ahead.

A Quick Look Back at Last Week:

Last week, we talked about the monthly U.S. jobs report. The numbers were a bit of a mixed bag: more jobs were added than expected, but the unemployment rate also ticked up higher than forecast. All of this came against a backdrop of market uncertainty, especially after President Trump announced new trade restrictions on Wednesday night. These unexpected and heavy-handed tariffs spooked the markets, leading to sharp declines with only limited rebounds. It’s clear that financial markets are struggling to digest these policy changes.

What to Watch This Week:

On Thursday, April 10 at 2:30 PM (ET), the latest U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) will be released. This is expected to be the most important macroeconomic figure of the week.

The CPI tracks changes in the prices of goods and services and is a key indicator of inflation. We’ll get both the year-over-year and month-over-month numbers, along with the Core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices to give a clearer picture of underlying inflation trends.

There’s growing concern about inflation in the U.S. right now. And with the added uncertainty from the new trade restrictions, there’s increased fear of stagflation, that tricky combo of slowing economic growth and rising prices. It’s not our base case, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
