The week ahead: Middle East conflict keeps markets busy.

In Money Care's weekend report, we present an overview of the (macroeconomic) events that could cause movement in stock markets.

Review of last week:

As expected, US interest rates remain unchanged. The Federal Reserve anticipates a gradual increase in inflation accompanied by a slight slowdown in economic growth in the United States over the coming months. The Fed does expect another modest interest rate cut in the fall. President Trump has reported that he would prefer to cut US interest rates to 2% (currently 4.5%) to spur the economy.

In addition to interest rates in the U.S., the sharply rising tension in the Middle East naturally played an important role. The markets reacted calmly for the time being. Although the price of oil rose about 10%, stock markets reacted calmly and generally fell 1-2%. Of great importance, of course, is to which the conflict escalates internationally.

The U.S. and China are noticing the effects of the ongoing trade war. For example, China reported that exports to the U.S. fell 34% in May, and Ford reported that it had to shut down factories because of supply problems.

Upcoming week:

The coming week will mainly be dominated by developments in the Middle East conflict and the trade war. The macroeconomic figures published are not in the foreground this week and are not expected to cause significant price fluctuations.

In the trade war, no significant breakthrough is expected in the coming week. Around July 1, the parties will negotiate further.

The heightened tension in the Middle East has most of the markets' attention in the coming week. To what extent is this conflict escalating, and will the U.S. become more involved? As yet unclear, causing the markets to adopt a somewhat wait-and-see attitude. We do expect the markets to react strongly to news on this subject. Be alert and always stay calm in case of panic!
