The week ahead: trade war developments
In Money Care's weekend report, we present you with the overview of the (macroeconomic) events that could cause movement in the stock markets.
Brief review of last week:
We already discussed it in Thursday's Money Care; all the macroeconomic figures notwithstanding, it is currently all about the developments regarding the global import tariffs as introduced by the US. In short, we can say that the markets are very uncertain and anxious, and a certain amount of hysteria has taken hold of investors worldwide. All other events have been pushed into the background, and it is now waiting for clarity. This will have to come from agreements between the U.S. and China. Only world political leaders can change sentiment.
Next week:
No official negotiations are currently scheduled between China and the United States. President Trump has indicated he is open to meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but no concrete plans have yet been confirmed. So, while there are signals from both sides for possible talks, no formal consultations are currently scheduled between China and the United States.
Moving on to the most important macroeconomic event: the ECB interest rate decision. This appears at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 17. Followed by at 2:45 p.m. the press conference in which the ECB will explain its policy and possibly comment on upcoming interest rate changes. Currently, short-term interest rates in the Eurozone stand at 2.65% and deposit rates at 2.5%. No change is expected.
On Friday, April 18, stock markets in Europe and the U.S. will be closed due to Good Friday.
