The week ahead: Inflation US

In Money Care's weekend report, we present the overview of the (macro-economic) events that could cause movement in stock markets.

Review of last week:

Financial markets moved very volatile during the past trading week. This ahead of the release of monthly labor figures in the US. On Friday afternoon it became clear that the labor market in the US continues to develop slightly disappointingly. With only fifty thousand new jobs in December, it fell short of expectations. Hourly earnings rose an average of 0.3% in line with expectations. On a positive note for the labor market, the jobless rate of the labor force fell to 4.4%, this was better than expected. This mixed result is viewed as slightly disappointing due to the low number of new jobs created.

These numbers may again give the Fed more reason to cut interest rates further. Equity markets and crypto markets reacted slightly positive as a result.

Upcoming week:

Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m., the U.S. inflation figure for December will be released. This involves the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Core CPI. The Core CPI excludes price changes in food and energy. Annual inflation is expected to remain similar to the November outcome. Over that month, inflation fell from 3% to 2.7% year-on-year. An inflation rate falling toward the desired 2% level will be positive for equity markets.
