A look back at the past week:

Over the past week, the financial markets had no significant macroeconomic data to process. However, President Trump made threatening remarks regarding the conflict with Iran, causing stock markets to fall on Wednesday. Later, he reiterated that he does not want a prolonged war, causing sentiment in the stock markets to turn positive again. Thus, the market fluctuated in response to geopolitical developments.

A look ahead to the coming week:

Next week, investors are looking forward to the release of the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Tuesday, July 14, at 2:30 p.m. The CPI reflects the change in the price of goods and services for consumers. The core CPI excludes price changes for food and energy. Inflation in the United States has long been well above the desired level, leading the Fed to consider an interest rate hike rather than a cut this year.

The CPI for June is expected to have declined on a month-over-month basis compared to May. This implies an expected drop in inflation from +0.5% in May to -0.1% in June. The forecast for the core CPI in June is 2.9% year-over-year and 0.3% month-over-month.

Attention will also be focused on the CPI in the European Union. It will be released on Friday, July 17, at 11:00 a.m. Inflation in June is expected to have declined slightly from 3.2% to 2.8% on a year-over-year basis. On June 11 of this year, the European Central Bank raised interest rates by 25 basis points to curb rising inflation.

Earnings season also kicks off again next week. Investors’ attention will be focused primarily on the release of ASML’s quarterly results on Wednesday morning, July 15. In addition, the major U.S. banks will report their quarterly results on July 14 and July 15.
