What is a genesis block?

Written by Yelza blogger | Mar 23, 2026 12:30:14 PM

A genesis block is the very first block in a blockchain, from which all other blocks are created and linked. It serves as the starting point of the entire network and is hardcoded into the blockchain’s protocol. This block establishes the foundation upon which all future transactions and blocks are built.

The genesis block is the first block that starts a blockchain.

Unlike other blocks, the genesis block does not reference a previous block, as it is the origin of the chain. It often contains unique data, such as a timestamp or message, and is created by the developers of the blockchain. Every subsequent block is linked back to the genesis block through a chain of cryptographic hashes, ensuring the integrity and continuity of the network. The existence of a single starting point allows all participants to verify the full history of the blockchain from its very beginning.

Short example:

Suppose a new blockchain is launched.

The first block that is created and recorded is the genesis block, which contains the initial data of the network.

All future blocks are then added on top of this block, forming a continuous chain that can always be traced back to the origin.
